Kilt pins became popular during the 1800s and remain a popular decoration for the kilt, kilted skirt, shawl and even as a lapel pin. It is a bit windy in the Highlands and the pin adds enough weight to the edge of the outer garment to keep the kilt from flying up in the breeze. It is fastened through the outer layer of material on the bottom right-hand side, about 2″ to 3″ from both the bottom and edge of the kilt. The precise placement is up to the individual, but it should be near enough to the bottom and corner to help keep the kilt from blowing open.
