The bagpipe is mentioned in the Bible and dates back at least 4000 years, originating with the Sumerian herdsmen as they would have been in possession of the necessary materials to make them:  goat or sheep skins for the air-chamber and reeds for the pipe. The tradition of bagpipes and pipers performing at funerals for policemen and firemen killed in the line of duty in the United States dates back about 150 years when the Irish and Scottish migrated, bringing many of their traditions with them.
