One cannot examine the artistic beauty of Celtic Knotwork that first appeared near 450AD when it was called a “mystical endless” knot, without forming a deep appreciation and respect for the ancient Celtic culture. Before converting to Christianity during the 5th Century, the Celts followed the religion of the Druids who were astrologers and believers in the powers and energy of both the natural and “Otherworld,” both of which we pass through on our journey of eternal life. When they converted to Christianity, they blended beliefs of both religions into one rather than leave one for the other.
The origins of Celtic knotwork is unknown, but it remains as popular today as it has been for over 2000 years. It is a carry-over of the ancient Druid filled with mysticism in its meaning. It appears as a woven, unbroken cord design, with no beginning or end, to remind us of the timeless nature of our spirit; the infinite cycle of birth and rebirth as we pass from one world into the other and back again. The “over” in the weave is believed to represent our crossing “over” to the Otherworld (Spiritual World) where we disappear only to reinter the Natural World which we see as rebirth at a later time during our journey of life.
