Door Knocker: Number 10 Lion Head

Door Knocker: Number 10 Lion Head

This rare and handsome heavy sand-cast brass door knocker was selected for and fitted on the front door of Number 10 Downing Street, the home of the British Prime Minister (also known as “Maggie’s Den” and “Blair’s Lair.”) The Lion has always held a high place in heraldry as a symbol of a good leader who must be “valiant in courage, strong of body, politic in counsel, and a foe to fear in battle.” The lion has a reputation of being of a noble nature and has been bestowed the title of King of the Beasts. It is individually sand cast using a pure first-run ingot brass mix, hand dressed, hand filed, and hand polished by British craftsmen to enhance the true beauty of quality brass and for durability. No scrap or recycled brass is used in any of our brassware in order to prevent any impurities in the mix. It is then antiqued to give background and definition to the pattern, then the antique colouration is relieved away from the brass on the more pronounced areas of the casting to give it a beautiful aged look.  Guaranteed to draw admiration from everyone who sees it.  Approximate mesurements: 7″ long, 3.50″ wide and weighs nearly 2 1/2 pounds.  For installation, there are three screw-holes in the back of the door knocker: 4 3/4″ between the centre of the screw holes at the top of the lion face to the bottom of the face. The screw hole for the raised disc striker plate is 2 3/4″ below the hole for the bottom of the face. All three screws and striker plate are included with the order.

Also known as “Maggies Den” or “Blair’s Lair” as this is the official door knocker found on the front door of the Prime Minister at Number 10 Downing Street in London. This, like all of our solid brass door knockers, is individually hand crafted by skilled craftsmen employed by a leading British foundry that has been creating quality basswares for the past 75 years. It is made using the traditional art of sand-casting and a pure first-run ingot brass mix rich in copper for depth of colour and durability. No scrap or recycled brass is used…ensuring that there will not be any impurities embedded in the raw brass mix. After the cast is removed from the sand mold it is shot-blasted, hand dressed and hand filed to remove any excess material that may be left during the casting. The door knocker is hand polished to a high British standard to enhance the natural beauty of quality brass then antiqued to give it background and definition in its pattern. This antique colouration is removed from the more pronounced areas giving the finished piece a beautifully aged look. The #10 is made to last for generations and will be admired by all who enter. Approximate measurements: 7″ in height, 3.50″ in width and it weighs 2 pounds 6 ounces. (38 ounces)
