Door Knocker: Claddagh

Door Knocker: Claddagh

This traditional Irish Claddagh design was first introduced as a “friendship” ring in the 17th century; originating from Claddagh, a small fishing village just outside the city of Galway. It shows the heart (symbol of LOVE) cocooned between two clasping hands (symbol of FRIENDSHIP) with a crown (symbol of LOYALTY) surmounted on top: “With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love.” This design has no beginning or end thus represents a vow of eternal and lasting love and commitment between the couple. The ring was introduced in America when worn by new arrivals during the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849), and remains a prized heirloom to be passed down from mother to the first daughter to marry. The mens version is also worn as a friendship ring. This door knocker is sand-cast by a leading British foundry using a pure first-run brass mix rich in copper for depth of colour and durability. Measurements: 4.25″ wide, 4.50″ long and 10.3 ounces in weight.
