The Thistle became the Scottish national symbol when it was stamped on silver coins by the Royal Mint under the instructions of King James III in 1470. During the 16th Century, the marriage of King James V to Princess Margaret of England became known as the “Marriage of The Thistle and Rose” (the Rose being the national flower of England after the War of The Roses. In 1540, the Order of The Thistle was founded.
