The heart symbolized the center of life with the ancient Celts. They did not understand the mysteries of life, but they took love, loyalty, devotion and faith very seriously. The heart becomes the center of life and represents the emotions of love, loyalty and devotion between two people.
The Scottish Thistle is not the most attractive plant in Scotland, but it is tough and prickly and lends with the Gaelic Scottish Motto: ” NEMO ME IMPONE LACESSIT ” which means ” no one harms me without punishment. It came into the favor of the Scottish Clansmen during a time when their country was frequently being invaded and coastal villages plundered by the Vikings and Danes. The invaders preferred to attack during the darkness of night when Scottish defenders were sleeping. To move silently and swiftly, they often removed their footwear. Unfortunately for them, they were unaware of the sharp thorns of the Thistle and yelled in surprise and pain when the prickly thorns penetrated deeply into the bottoms of their feet. Awaken by the warning of the screams, the Scots were able to assemble in time to defeat the invaders on numerous occasions thanks to the Thistle. The Scottish Thistle became recognized as the national symbol, being honored on silver coins during the reign of King James 111 in 1470. The Scottish poet, William Dunbar, coined the marriage of King James V of Scotland to Princess Margaret of England in 1503 as “The marriage of the Thistle and the Rose;” The Rose being the national flower of England. In 1540 The Order Of The Thistle was founded. For these reasons the Scottish Thistle became recognized as the national emblem by Royal Decree, thus the Crown over the Heart and Thistle(s) in this beautiful pendant. Perhaps the two Thistles represent the love between two people. What a great gift for yourself or for that special person in your life.
