Horse Brass: Suffolk Punch

Horse Brass: Suffolk Punch

The Suffolk Punch is one of the main breeds of draft horses in England. It has a splendid disposition and easy temperament. It exhibits a ready willingness to work, great endurance and an inner determination to keep working until its tasks are completed. It has a powerful arching neck, strong upright shoulders and a short strong back. It weighs between 1700-2000 pounds and is in great demand by farmers because of its stamina and ability to plough the heavy clay soil of the county of Suffolk. It is thought to have descended from the medieval “Great Horse” brought to England by William The Conqueror in 1066; one of the oldest breeds of draft horses in England. It also may have been the horse by choice by the Knights Templar for its strength and steadiness during battle.
