The lion is a solar animal invested with divine qualities; symbol of Royal power, leadership and dominion, military victory, bravery, vigilance and fortitude. It is the Royal emblem of England and Scotland and of British imperial power in the 19th century. In China and Japan the lion is protective. The lion is looked upon as the king of beasts and is often found in both horse brass and heraldic design. They are usually found in one of two positions: passant (walking…stalking) or rampant (rearing on his hind legs..ready to do battle). It is usually facing to the left, suggesting the aggressive/intimidating side of ones ran in society, but may be facing to the right as the protector of the people. Its popularity is no doubt due to the fact that it has been the choice of monarchs since appearing on the royal arms from the reign of William I (1066-1087) to the present.
