This unit was awarded the title of "Royal" by its Monarch for its faithful and heroic sevices to the Crown. It was previously known as the The Scots Greys; originally The Grey Dragoons when the musket was introduced within cavalry units. This unit broke up the French Regiment du Roi at Ramillies and captured its Colours (flag), winning it praise by its king. The colours are to be protected to the last man with the flag never being allowed to touch the ground as long as the units is still able to fight. To capture the colours is the greatest feat of any battle.
