The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious military award for bravery “in the presence of the enemy” to members of the British armed services. It was first awarded by Queen Victoria in 1856. Most of the 1358 that have been awarded have been presented by British Monarchs at Buckingham Palace.
