Horse Brass: Knights Templar Seal

A VERY RARE HORSE BRASS. Few people are familiar with the Knights Templar (originally calling themselves the “Poor Fellow-soldiers of Jesus Christian” as they devoted their sword to the defense of pilgrims of all faiths as they traveled dangerous routes to the Holy Land. They later became known as The Knighthood of the Temple of Solomon after they were given the Temple of Solomon for their headquarters in the Holy Land…. and later Knights Templar as the Temple Mount became their centre of activity in the Holy Land. Many who have heard about this organization hold negative feelings due in part to the “bum rap” used by the King of France, Philip IV, to discredit them in order to demand the removal of their Papal support which would lead to their excommunication, their fall from popular support of the people who looked more to them than the King as their defender. Once achieved, they would be taken and executed. By doing this, he would be able to avoid paying back the money he owed for numerous loans he took out with them to finance his wars and lavish lifestyle. France was nearly broke. He would also be able to acquire their vast property holdings in France, making him once again a wealthy monarch. Remember, this is the same king who once sought the protection of the Templars, who willingly hid him in one of their castle when his life was in danger….they had been close friends of his father. This is also the same king who arrested and executed Jews to rid France of its Jewish population and to acquire their properties. The move against the French Jews is thought to have been in preparation for the assault on the unsuspecting Templars who did not resist arrest as they knew they were innocent of the charges and looked forward to defending their Order in a court of law. It took seven years of horrific torturing before Philip successfully extracted confessions necessary to find them guilty as charged, to their burning at the stake, and discredit the Order that had served the Pope and the Catholic Church so well for nearly 200 years. Removal of the Templars would remove the main source of competition for the popular support and loyalty of the people, as the Templars were viewed by the people as Christian heroes. The Order served as the “secret weapon” of Richard-the Lion-Heart during in his battles against Muslim armies…the battles that earned him the “Lion Hearted” title to his name. We were fortunate to find a source for these pieces.
