Horse Brass: Isle of Man

Horse Brass: Isle of Man

The Island Of Man was settled by Vikings who wanted to keep an eye on Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland and on the connecting waterways in the event invaders were approaching. All are visible from this island. Located south of Scotland, between England and Ireland and north of Wales … this location was a perfect choice. Why were the three running legs used as their national symbol? The Triskelion (Greek word for the three legged symbol) was first observed on an Athenian shield given as a competitive prize in 500 B.C. and may have been introduced in the area by invading Romans who had defeated the Greeks. Interestingly, The Isle. of Man became the first country in Great Britain to have a Parliamentary form of government…associating it with the Greek political system of government and later providing England with an alternative to its authoritarian Monarchy.
