The first evidence of a football match in England was in 1170, when a gentleman named William Fitzsteven wrote after his visit to London:

“After dinner all youths in the city goes out into the fields for a very popular game of ball.  The elders,  the fathers, and the men of wealth come on horseback to view the contests of their juniors and in their fashion sport with the young men, and there seems to be aroused in those elders a stirring of natural heat by viewing so much activity and by participating in the joys of unrestrained youth.”

With over 40,000 association clubs, England has more than any other country in the world.
