The “Scottie” is actually better known among breeders as the Scottish Terrier, or Aberdeen Terrier. It is a Highland breed believed to have originated about the mid 15th century from the Blackmount region of Perthshire for the purpose of hunting vermin, badgers, and foxes on farms and in the Highlands.
The name Scottie comes from the Roman name Scotii for bands of Irish raiders seen as a growing threat to the safety of Romans in England. It is not surprising as the Celts, including the Irish, were often described by the Romans as a people who enjoyed fighting to the point where if there was not a common enemy, they would fight among themselves. Scotii tribes migrated into Scotland bringing their bagpipes and kilts with them. They eventually absorbed the Pictish population into their mix.
