The lion traditionally symbolizes courage, nobility, royalty, strength and valor, attributes fitting for the “King of Beasts.” It is believed that William 1 (1165-1214) referred to himself as ” William The Lion” and incorporated the Lion Rampant on his Battle Standard, calling it “The Lion of Bravery.” King Richard 1 (Richard The Lion Heart) also used the design in his heraldry during the 12th century. The “Lion Rampant” refers to the position of the lion. It is shown as a profile of a lion standing upright on both hind legs with his forelegs raised as he readies for battle, with claws unsheathed as he is ready to strike. Battle Standards (flags) were important as they were used to identify opposite combatants during fierce hand to hand combat.
The Lion Rampant later became incorporated into the royal coat of arms of Scotland with the Latin Motto ” NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT” which translates to read “NO ONE ATTACKS ME WITH IMPUNE.” In “Scottish” that can be translated into ” WHA DAUR MEDDLE WI ME?” Either way you look at it, it means “DON’T MESS WITH ME IF YOU DON’T WANT TO GET HURT.” The Lion Rampant design was also incorporated into the Great Seal of Scotland which was placed on all official documents. Like the Thistle, the Lion Rampant can is displayed with pride throughout Scotland. “That’s who we are.”
