LATIN: “NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT”
SCOTTISH: “WHA DAUR MEDDLE WI ME”
ENGLISH: “DON’T MESS WITH ME IF YOU DON’T WANT TO GET HURT.”
If you try picking a Scottish thistle, it will demand your respect. By protecting Clan defenders from sneak attacks by invaders from Norway and Denmark, the Thistle earned its place in Scottish history. It was struck on silver coins by the Royal Mint, became inscribed on the Great Seal of Scotland, and worked its way into becoming the National Symbol of Scotland. It later became the highest honor for a private citizen as “The Order of the Thistle,” awarded to outstanding citizens for their unselfish contributions making the country a better place for people to live. ( England awards its citizens the (“OBE”) Order of the British Empire). England has a rose, Ireland a shamrock, wales its daffodil, but only Scotland has a thistle.
The purple stone reminds us that stones were often collected from the paths by Clansmen as they hiked through the Highlands blanketed in heather and Scotch Broom. These stones would then be embedded in their jewelry. I have been told the Scots carry their wealth with them due to their distrust toward keeping their valuables in a bank.
